Special Treasures News 2011

In 2011 Special Treasures Foundation started a Mission in Bulumbi, Busia in Uganda with the intention of implementing a ministry which could be summed up by the acronym FEED; offering: Food, Education, Evangelisation and holistic Development, not only to the most needy children, but also seeking to impact the entire community.

Bulumbi - Busia

Specialtreasures Uganda flagThe town, Busia, with a population of about 47,000 inhabitants, is located in the East of Uganda, just on the Ugandan/Kenyan border. It is an agricultural town producing such crops as maize, millet, coffee, cotton, beans, mangoes and groundnuts. Many of the people in the Bulumbi county of Busia are peasants and are barely able to provide for their families because of, among other factors, poor agricultural skills and occasional drought. There is also a significant lack of resources for basic education, health and hygiene needs. Life expectancy at birth was estimated to be 53 years in 2012.

Our mission therefore is to bring Good News to the poor of this county which includes addressing their needs, and we have begun to do so with your support, for which we are very grateful. Below lists some of what we were able to accomplish over the past two years.

2011

In 2011, we provided food hampers during our first visit in the summer and also for the Christmas season for over fifty families. These hampers included maize flour, beans, rice, sugar, and toiletries such as soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Educational material such as pens, pencils, erasers, and math sets were also distributed and Bibles were given to those who could read English. On our return to the UK, we posted three barrels of clothing, including shoes and toiletries in October but these were not cleared from customs until June of the following year. Because of the challenges encountered with customs, we have decided to seek alternative ways of meeting this need.
